Top 5: Web Crazes

St. Paul’s comes with its own set of phases. Year to year, students find new ways to entertain themselves while avoiding work. Here’s a look at the top 5 most recent web crazes:

5. Old Gregg
Online clips from the British TV series The Mighty Boosh have introduced the campus to the character Old Gregg. Old Gregg is a hermaphroditic merman and avid watercolorist whose other obsessions include Bailey’s Irish Cream, the series’ protagonist, Howard, and former Guns ‘N Roses guitarist Slash. Old Gregg also resembles in his appearance and mannerisms the funk singer Rick James. What’s not to love?

4. Potter Puppet Pals
Potter and non-Potter fans alike enjoy this web series about the adventures of a puppet version of the bespectacled wizard and his friends. Brilliant episodes like “Wizard Swears” and “Mysterious Ticking Noise” keep many SPS students coming back for more. Highlights include a Neville Longbottom who curiously resembles a potato, a shockingly profane Dumbledore, and the phrase “What is this rumpus?”

3. Failblog.org
Do you enjoy pictorial evidence of other people’s ineptitude? Don’t worry, that was a rhetorical question! Many St. Paul’s students are regular visitors to this website, which is devoted to the daily documentation of everyday incompetence. Truly, there is no greater satisfaction than seeing a photo of three neighboring exit signs with the caption “Redundancy Fail.” Browse through hundreds of photos and be comforted by the fact that your own blunders pale in comparison to the magnificence of the fail.

2. PostSecret
Looking into the lives of complete strangers may seem creepy to some, but it appears to be the ultimate outlet of therapy for over two million people. Updated every Sunday, the blog’s manager, Frank, uploads twenty new secrets to share to the public and allow utter truth to connect those across the world.

1. Leekspin
When I was first told of the righteousness of the curious phenomenon that is Leekspin.com, I was skeptical. After all, it is a bit of tough sell: “Well it’s an anime girl twirling a scallion set to a 27-second loop of a scat solo from a Finnish folk song! It’s great!” But, as with many things of this nature, I was wrong to doubt it. At the time of this writing, the handy timer at the bottom of the Leekspin page tells me I have been spinning for nine hypnotic minutes. It’s easy to see how this simple website has captivated St. Paul’s with it’s dulcet tones and mesmerizing vegetable graphics. Keep spinning, my friends.
