A Dissection of Dinner
Ah, Thanksgiving…the all-American (and sometimes even Canadian) holiday that brings us home to our families for a much-needed break, seduces us with mouth-watering scents wafting in from the kitchen, and summons us to give thanks for all that we’ve got before plunging into the cold abyss of winter. And here at St. Paul’s, we certainly do have a lot to be thankful for. So without further ado, a little list of blessings we all should count this upcoming Turkey Thursday, presented in the form of highly delectable, unabashedly corny food analogies.

Turkey – The true meat of our time at SPS, as well it should be, is the enriching academic experience we receive. Our classes may push us to the brink, but it is through this brinksmanship that we grow conscientious, capable, and competent.
Stuffing – A mixture of breads (the quintessential Paulies), vegetables (the self-proclaimed eco-freaks and frelksters), and spices (the truly one-of-a-kind characters), the stuffing stands both unified collectively and intrinsically diverse, just like the SPS student body. Our peers have much to teach us, and when they aren’t sleep-deprived or swine-stricken, one would be hard-pressed to find a more talented, original, and dynamic populace.
Mashed Potatoes – The fuel of our studies, our teachers represent the mashed potatoes of our Millville meal. Combining well with the vegetables, stuffing, and meat of our SPS experience, our teachers do so much for us not only in the classroom but also outside of it; be it in the dorm, on the field, or at extra help, we couldn’t ask for a more dedicated crew of mentors.
Cornbread – The starchy sustenance of the meal, the cornbread, serves as a metaphor for the talented staff which works so hard to keep the school on its feet and running smoothly. Ranging from the Upper staff members who ensure that we are well-fed to the admissions officers who select our student body, these individuals deserve our praise more than ever in this holiday season.
Vegetables – At times fresh and green like peas or harvest hues like carrots, the vegetables of St. Paul’s truly must be its spectacular campus. And where else can a student body of a mere 500 boast 2000+ acres of lake, wood, and field? In this season of thanks, we all should take a moment to stop and smell the conifers.
Gravy – This sauce, brewed from meat and veggie juices and poured over the other edible delights, symbolizes the bond that ties us together–our membership in the Millville community. As seen spirit week, school pride is alive and well at St. Paul’s, and keeping this flame kindled will play a huge role in carrying us through the impending winter term.
Cranberry Sauce – A berry delicacy making its annual cameo this season, cranberry sauce adds a divine splash of sweetness to the mix. At St. Paul’s, our passions add this vim and vigor to our lives, providing a change in pace from our academic endeavors. With roughly 70 extracurricular activities and ten sports options per term, the variety of societies allows for a range of expression unattainable at other schools.
Pumpkin Pie – This dessert, the capstone of the meal and the last taste in the mouth, combines the best elements of sweet and savory and is distinctive to the Thanksgiving meal; in similar form, St. Paul’s motto of freedom with responsibility distinguishes us from our boarding brethren. Having the freedom to live our lives largely how we see fit is one of the greatest and most unusual gifts St. Paul’s gives us, and truly one worth thanks in this time of gratitude.
