Fiske Cup 2010 earned itself a spot in the history books. Twelve dorms participated in the annual theatre event. On the 21st of February, three individuals were awarded the Greaves Medals, and the winner of the prestigious Fiske Cup was announced. Although only the specific winners are featured in this article, countless people took part in the Fiske Cup experience, and they all contributed to making the SPS tradition an amazing success this year.

Best Actress: Caroline Ferguson ‘13
Caroline Ferguson ’13 was presented with this year’s best actress award for her captivating role as Duke Orsino in Middle House’s play: “She’s the Man, Well, Sorta”. Caroline shared that she “worked hard to take in all the direction from Amelia [White ‘10] in order to perfect the idea of my character.” She added that she was “so happy to win the award and know that all the hard work paid off”. In addition, Caroline praised the bonding aspect of the Fiske Cup and the “hysterical” nature of her dorm play rehearsals. She revealed that “every night was like a giant session of laughter. I had so much fun working with my dorm and Mr. Valdes!”

Best Actor: Jake Kim ‘10
This year’s best actor award went to Jake Kim ’10 for his powerful role as Andrew Beckett in North House’s rendition of “Philadelphia”. Jake shared that at first, he was very hesitant about his role as Andrew Beckett because of the obstacles that he faced in playing the part. In the play, Andrew Beckett is a homosexual lawyer that is fired from his job because of his sexual orientation. Jake said that “from the beginning, I was nervous because I had a difficult role and felt as though it was very tough to understand the perspective of my character.” He admitted that in the end, he realized that he “had to keep it up for the sake of the dorm.” Jake attributed his success to his dorm for pushing him to really take the role seriously and become dedicated to his character. In the end, Jake also recognized that the Fiske Cup experience helped him to “bond with the rest of his dorm, and to discover many previously hidden friendships.”

Best Contribution to a Production: Sophia Deery ‘12
Sophia Deery was this year’s best contributor to a play for her choreography and acting in Brewster House’s presentation of “Grease”. When interviewed, Sophia said, “Performing is my favorite thing to do, and it’s a great feeling to be recognized for doing something that you love.” She was quick to add that “the Brewster girls played a huge part in my getting the Greaves medal because of their willingness to try all of my crazy ideas, and putting forth all of the effort that made our show a success.” Sophia also praised the freedom that the Fiske Cup bestows upon the student body. In her opinion, the best thing about Fiske Cup is “the huge variety of finished productions”.

Best Show: North House
The winner of the Fiske Cup this year was North House for its interpretation of “Philadelphia”. Directed by Sam Rodd ’11, the play was the sole serious drama in this year’s wide range of performances. When interviewed on the subject, Sam said, “We all felt that a serious play would be well-received, and that it would stand out against the competition.” When asked about the win, Sam replied, “The whole dorm had been working for so long and it was really nice to see that people recognized all of the hard work that we put in.” Sam revealed that all along, he aspired to “perfection”. He intended to put on a great performance, and was very excited by the enthusiasm of the actors. Brendon Stoner ’10, who played one of the main roles in the show, said that “it was nice to see the dorm come together. We had never really come together for anything like this before.” Lastly, Sam stressed that “without the strong efforts of all of the actors, this play would have been nothing.”
